Being the closest planet to Earth in the solar system, Mars has always seemed an attractive destination. Our first priority was the moon, but we did that in 1969, so experts set their sights on more ambitious goals. Recent discoveries by the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers have even led experts to believe that it could eventually become habitable for humans. But if people were to build colonies on Mars, they would need vacation spots up there, right? After all, it’s not life if you can’t take a few days off. We have put together a list of interesting landmarks that might become tourist hotspots one day.
The perfect volcano to hike
Volcanoes are a pretty impressive sight. People often hike to the top on vacation since they offer breathtaking views. We have no reason to think the same wouldn’t with Martian volcanoes. This one is called Olympus Mons, and it is nothing like those on Earth.
For starters, it’s 16 miles high: three times taller than Mt. Everest! The good news is that it’s what geologists call a “shield volcano.” Its sides are easy to climb because they are made out of hardened lava that dripped down during past eruptions.
