The Expanse
“The Expanse” is a sci-fi TV series set years into the future about how humanity conquered the entire solar system. Unlike other series that focus more on exploring space, this show includes how people interact against internal and external confrontations.
“The Expanse” first aired on Syfy on December 14, 2015, and was directed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. There are six seasons and aired its last episode on December 10, 2021. It has received much positive criticism and is available on Amazon Prime Video.
For All Mankind
“For All Mankind” focuses on how the world would have become if certain space events happened. This series is set in a world where the Soviet Union first landed on the moon instead of the United States.
The series premiered on November 1, 2019, on Apple TV+. It was directed by Ronald D. Moore and Matt Wolpert and was praised by critics for its details and strong storytelling skills. However, there are no present talks to extend the series, as the last episode of season 2 aired on April 23, 2021.
Battlestar Galactica
“Battlestar Galactica” is a TV series that gives a glimpse into the lives of the last surviving human generation in the solar system. It shows them fleeing from their homes, called the Cylons, and searching for a new abode. The show explores the day-to-day life challenges they encountered on their way to safety.
The series first premiered on a Sci-fi channel on December 8, 2003, and served as the remake of the 1978 series of the same name. The 75th episode, the last episode, was released in 2009.
Star Trek: The Next Generation
“Star Trek” is undoubtedly one of this list’s most popular space-themed series. For those who have yet to watch it, it explores the crew of a spaceship called USS Enterprise, whose job is to tour the galaxy and discover new civilizations. It is one of the oldest-running TV series that premiered on December 8, 1987, and ended on May 14, 1994.
Due to its great success and outstanding reviews, the series was renewed for a second time and is available on Netflix. This time, the show followed the space adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the spaceship captain. Aside from the memorable moments, Hollywood stars like Patrick Stewart were in the series.
Dark Matter
This Canadian series is about strangers who wake up on a spaceship with no memory of how and why they got into it. The show has three series and is available on Netflix. It aired on both Space and Syfy on June 12, 2015.
The series was the brainchild of directors Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. It is based on the comic book developed by Prodigy Pictures.
